Check out Nancy (@travelgirl1971 on Twitter) and her review and photos of the intimate and exclusive New Kids on the Block concert that happened last month in New York City!
Well I cannot tell a lie no one was more surprised that Danielle (@openingmynds) and I (@travelgirl1971) ended up at the February 15th NKOTB show in NYC. Between tix always being put onsale at same time when group claims they save some for each sale, Blockheads and their ticket gangs, and finally the scalpers, Danielle & I had it with them and were talking of permanently pond jumping to the BSB side!
Then came along Mel (@meldiv75) talking of her friend Laura (@CantBDoinThis) selling her tix to show (both live in Boston and were snowed in). So after much pond jumping #TeamNickolas talk we were off to see Jonathan and Joey in NYC after I got in contact with Laura to purchase tickets and Danielle told her hubby Dan that we were road tripping to NYC to see the NKOTB guys! I’m sure he thought we were nuts as show was at 8pm and Danielle was leaving Baltimore at 4pm to pick me up & continue on to NYC! LOL
Finally we arrived at venue as you can see from pics attached to this NKOTB NYC show story/review and the guys were kind enough to start show on Donnie time as usual rather than the tweeted about starting show early for change because of some fans that had stood out in cold for hours as venue was for most part GA (there was quite a bit of seating in the back of the venue). I had tweeted Jon that they could now start the show as Danielle had just arrived & no more than five minutes later they did…a much laughed at close timing incident!
After coming out and singing Crash guys thanked fans for showing up at all due to weather and told us how they’d be singing some songs they normally don’t during a regular NKOTB concert and would have a quiet and soft Q&A session (rolls eyes…that soft and quiet stuff had to do with Cottonelle tour sponsor). So after singing Remix and doing Favorite Girl the old school dance way (see your Hangin’ Tough Live VHS tape!) we had our first Q&A session…some questions had to do with can we have different songs for a change, guys talking about how this tour was going to be different than others, more thanks about coming out in weather, how its decided what songs put on cd/in show (yeah guys we saw how BSB does that…I’d love to see a NKOTB fight!), etc.
After that Joey and Danny acted as though we wanted to hear I Need A Melody when it was apparently part of set list for night anyway and talked about how it was a debated song to put on 10 cd. Ultimately did not make it & Jon finally told them how much he loved song after he was one of the guys who didn’t like it at first! So Joey and Danny decided to sing song in the audience (got a pic of Joe doing that!) And after some cajoling from me & the fact I put her in front of me after Joey came down stairs in back of audience Danielle got a Joe hug! 🙂 Then it was onto the musical surprises of Stingy and She’s a Killer, both which get fans very excited…especially Donnie girls (I don’t understand that myself but to each their own! lol) before closing that segment of show with Click, Click, Click. Stools were brought out for Q&A session but Joey, Donnie and Danny felt sitting on edge of stage made q&a seem more intimate and finally The Knights were shamed, bullied, whatever you want to call it into sitting on edge of stage too. Hey they felt stools were cleaner, I don’t blame them! LOL
The second Q&A Soft Talk Segment consisted of a long, drawn out story of two friends reuniting at beginning of NKOTB 2008 reunion. With the way choked up story was going after it was finished Joey was like well that wasn’t the ending I was expecting…it was a happy one not a sad one, then someone asked which of the guys would marry her, naturally Jon stood up from where guys were sitting on edge of stage and said it wasn’t going to be him (lots of laughter about that!). Sadly for her that was her fave NK! And then Danielle got to ask her question! Ryan, the band’s new mgt. go to guy asked her if it was a real question…you couldn’t really blame him after last two fans spoke! Anyhow Danielle had said that since she knows Jordan plays the keys would any of the other guys either separately or together be performing with musical instruments (this question really stemmed from fact she’s seen Nick play guitar and has caught up on some BSB videos of other guys playing instruments as well)…after a few of the guys said what a good question that was….Donnie said that it was being discussed and Joey said he better get in 2009/2010 shape because it looked liked he’d be stripping during that segment of show! Oh Joseph!
The chatting segment must have gone on longer than anticipated because after it according to set list I’ll Be There was suppose to be next but that was skipped over for Right Stuff/Step By Step/Hangin’ Tough & We Will Rock you mash up before show concluded for the night. Jon and Donnie decided to pop down into audience (Donnie didn’t go very far).
I know plenty of people who don’t get the why do you like Jon thing since he’s not exactly a Donnie, Jordan or Joey stage performer but after show Jon made his way from one side of theater to the other taking pics with people, saying hi and giving out much loved Jon hugs, if you ever have received one you know they are the best and he hugs you like he means it, don’t know how else to describe it. And its moments and actions like that which I’m sure aren’t easy for him is why there will always be Jongirls and why he holds such a special place in many of our hearts.
After show Danielle and I met up with some of my fellow Philly/NJ girls Kim, her Mom, Natalie, Stefanie, Jackie and Lizzy…we chatted about how much we enjoyed seeing show, missed whoever our favorite guy was, and naturally took a pic to document our night out! Also at the show was a friend of Danielle’s named Frank, who since Danielle and I had camera/phone issues was nice enough to take the pics with Jon at end of show. Its always nice to make a new BH friend!!
On the way home Danielle & I stopped at a diner nearby my house for a much needed late night bite to eat and we discussed show, our Joe and Jon love, laughed about how silly we were for doing show at last minute after Danielle had joked about us doing a road trip.
Ironically our day had ended much like it started….talking about BSB and Nick (Danielle has quite a bit of catching up to do & was shocked by Howie’s line in BSB Hot, Hot, Hot song! lol). We concluded that even though our NKOTB side of pond frustrates us to no end (see beginning of this story for some of what gets on our nerves!) and we plan on visiting BSB side of pond more often that our Jon and Joe love & friends we have made will have us still visiting that side of the boy band pond as well! 🙂
