Review: “Outlander” – Season 3, Episode 5 – “Freedom & Whiskey”

by | Oct 8, 2017 | Review, Television | 0 comments

This has to be one of my favorite episodes of “Outlander,” especially in Season 3. Almost every scene was amazing, especially when it comes to Claire. It might be her best work since the scenes after losing Faith, her first daughter.

Brianna

She still seems spoiled as all get out, but in a way I can understand why she’s acting the way she is. Her life was turned upside down and she’s right – she can’t just come back to Boston and pretend like any of that happened. She has to find herself and hopefully… she’s finding that with Roger.

Roger

My boy Roger is back! He comes to Boston for a real American Christmas. It’s his first Christmas without the reverend and it’s a little surprising he comes unannounced, but he comes with good news for Claire, which … I don’t think Claire was ready for.

He knows where Jamie is. Jamie is living as Alexander Mackenzie in Edinburg, Scotland as a printer and, I’m assuming, a writer. More on that.

Skeletons

Claire’s work BFF Joe brings in a skeleton from the Caribbean and he points out that it’s a white woman. Granted, I haven’t read the books, but I’ve researched the series and let’s just say, these skeletons come back to haunt Claire.

Brianna and Roger

It would be stupid for Roger and Brianna to not get together. They are both twisted together by time travel and families and their past history in a way. I’ll be interested to see if Roger stays in America with Brianna or whether Brianna goes back to Scotland with him. There’s also a part of me that wants Roger and Brianna to go back through the stones, too.

The Other Woman

Claire has more strength than I could because I probably would have slapped the blonde trick after she came at me at the ceremony for Frank. She thinks she knows everything and didn’t know the whole story, obviously.

“He was the love of my life and I wanted him, even if it meant I had to share him with you,” she told Claire.

Slap. I would have slapped her.

Alexander Malcolm

Claire goes back through the stones, which we don’t see, and honestly, I loved the way they did it. They used the “puddle” speech that starts off the book and you see her about to step into a puddle in Boston and suddenly she’s in Edingburg, in her new dress she made from raincoats with secret pockets and before she knows it, she sees the sign that says “A. Malcolm” and walks in the door.

And she hears Jamie’s voice.

The look on her face is seriously some of Claire’s best acting and the camera pans down to see Jamie’s back to her in the print shop.

And Claire talks.

Jamie slowly starts to turn around and when he sees her, his blue eyes go wide in shock and then…. He passes out.

AND THAT IS HOW THEY END IT FOR TWO WHOLE WEEKS!

What the hell Starz, you’re gonna make us wait THAT long to see what’s next?

Confession: I went and got the audiobook of the book in the series they are in now, skipped to this part in the book and started listening. I have no shame. At all.
